Overview: The Senior Vice President of Human Resources will have global responsibility for all aspects of the human resource function including talent acquisition, training and development, compensation and benefits, succession planning, diversity, transaction / administration of HR operations, HRIS and legal compliance. This position will report to the Chief Executive Officer and will be a member of the executive leadership team.
The SVP Human Resources will be a key contributor on both a strategic and operational level. He/she will provide overall direction and guidance to the global human resources department and, importantly, serve as a business partner to key operating executives. Represent division needs and point of view with parent company to insure appropriate corporate resources and programs are in place to meet overall business needs.
He/she will be instrumental in helping to shape the management team to assure that the company has the most qualified leaders, managers and individual contributors in the key roles and to galvanize the group to work effectively together as a team. Importantly, the SVP HR will assure that the company has a proactive HR approach to foster the organizationƒ?Ts ability to achieve its business objectives. He/she will need to assess the companyƒ?Ts current HR requirementsƒ?"identifying, prioritizing and establishing action plans to develop and implement programs that add value to the company. The SVP will have the personal style to work effectively in this company characterized by an entrepreneurial orientation, a bias for action and a creatively driven work force.
The company is seeking an accomplished human resources executive who is committed to developing the strategic and operational excellence of the function and leading HR initiatives that are realistic and doable within the context of the companyƒ?Ts culture. The successful executive will bring a significant level of intellectual prowess and naturally develop the trust and credibility of the executive leadership team in order to be viewed as a problem solver.
Major Responsibilities:
- Set the human resources strategy for the company in coordination and collaboration with the management team by developing a keen understanding of the company culture, business goals and division \ parent company strategies, and establishing organizational initiatives in support of those strategies.
- Serve as trusted advisor, sounding board and business partner to both CEO and other senior leaders, functioning as the expert on people and organizational issues and providing guidance on managing complex organizational and people issues.
- Effectively lead the performance management, training \ development and succession programs to aggressively build leadership & management bench strength and ensure organizational effectiveness throughout the company.
- Manage an effective and lean human resources department, assuring that competent staff is retained, developed and/or hired. Assure that the HR organization is staffed with the highest level of competence in the respective functional fields.
- Maintain and/or develop and execute a strategy in the compensation/benefits area consistent with the companyƒ?Ts guidelines, which helps to drive individual performance and fosters an environment which retains the highest quality of staff, and promotes and sustains a high level of employee morale, while maintaining a cost effective approach.
- Maintain knowledge of international human resources policies, programs, laws.
- Assure that the company is in compliance with employee-related federal, state and local regulations and ensure timely and accurate reporting to all outside agencies, as required, and assure compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley.
- Actively manage the HR budgeting process.
CANDIDATE SPECIFICATION: KEY SELECTION CRITERIA
Ideal Experience
- Functional expertise: Broadly experienced HR professional whose background includes significant contributions and/or direct management of organization development, training and development, staffing, succession planning within a global consumer oriented company. A generalist who is proactive in conceiving, initiating and executing HR programs relevant to the organizationƒ?Ts culture. Should have spent significant time in and/or exposed to employee relations activities as well as experienced with devising and implementing team building activities. Up-to-date experience in development and implementation of HR tools and programs, i.e. savvy about working with performance appraisal systems, HRIS implementation. Ability to manage and work with lean HR department budgets.
- Industry experience: While hands-on experience in and/or significant exposure to the search industry is ideal, individual may surface from other internet, technology or appropriate consumer goods environments. Experience in a public company characterized by fast paced environment. Experience and/or significant exposure to organizations that have transitioned from entrepreneurial level to next stage.
- International orientation: Sufficient amount of experience in a global company to appreciate the complexities and issues/nuances involved in global business operations, particularly in Europe and Asia.
- Strategic thinker: He/she will have shown an ability to contribute at both a strategic and operational level. Business savvy. Skill and experience in improving efficiency within the appropriate resource framework.
- Approximately 15-20 years of progressively broadening HR assignments, with exposure to a number of functional areas, and specifically with up-to-date experience in organizational design, staffing/recruiting, training and development, and employee relations.
- Ideally, has had experience in and/or exposure to working for companies which have used progressive HR management as a business differentiator. Proven track record as effective manager in a high performance organization, ability as a builder of collaborative, high performance teams whose management style is characterized by hands-on, results orientation. Skill and experience in improving efficiency while planning for the needs of a dynamically changing culture.
- Education:Undergraduate degree required. M.B.A. and/or advanced degree highly desirable. SPHR preferred.
Critical Competencies for Success
- Ability to Link Business Objectives to Organizational Initiatives: Has served in a key HR role in which there was a requirement to gain an understanding of the companyƒ?Ts business strategies and then build human resources and organizational development initiatives to support achievement of those strategies. This may be evidenced by leading HR through periods of significant change such as rapid growth, restructuring, M&A or leading highly innovative HR initiatives which were linked to the success of the business. Has had exposure to a suitable number of different environments in order to be able to adapt appropriate and creative approaches to HR function.
- Strong Organizational Development Skills:Prior experience in working closely with operating management to develop, design and implement programs in areas such as team building, succession planning, training and development, recruitment, and performance evaluation systems.
- Ability to Work Collaboratively with Top Executives: He/she must be able to establish credibility and proactively lead the organizational development and human resources agenda. Track record of success in implementing organization change initiatives working closely with senior managers.
- Strong HR Leadership and Operational Skills: Experienced with building and leading a strong human resources team that is focused on operational excellence while also able to provide guidance on strategic level. Is knowledgeable regarding all relevant state and federal employment laws and can provide counsel on senior level employment transactions. Ideally, has managed relevantly related administrative areas, i.e. facilities.
- Improve employee relations activities and communications: Experienced with integrating companyƒ?Ts values and HR initiatives via employee communications programs.
